John R. Cole is a prior enlisted Radioman (RM) having spent his first 15 years of active duty service directly supporting Coast Guard operational communications on both the east and west coasts of the United States. In the summer of 2001, less than a year after receiving his commission to Chief Warrant Officer, he was promoted to Lieutenant. As an inaugural officer of the fledgling Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Information Technology (C4IT) officer speciality, he helped migrate the Coast Guard to the new Microsoft Windows operating system. Since then, he’s been proudly serving the Mission Support community as both a C4IT officer and mentor to the enlisted workforce.
He holds an Associates’ in Applied Science from Erie Community College in Orchard Park, New York, a Bachelor of Science in Computer Systems from University of Maryland University College, a Master’s Degree in Information Technology Management and a Master’s Certificate in Projects and Programs from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.
His personal awards include three Meritorious Service Medals, four Coast Guard Commendation Medals, one Coast Guard Achievement Medal, one Commandant’s Letter of Commendation, and five Good Conduct awards.
He is a native of Derby, New York and is married to the former Christine Noëlle Daigle of Lowell, Massachusetts. They have been married for twelve years and are the parents of Milkbone, their highly active, treat-loving, English springer spaniel.
Commander Cole is a genealogist and the author of numerous family histories including his own. He is a graphic novelist and a comic book author, best known for his character Captain Coastie. He is currently working on his first fiction novel. He enjoys painting, sewing, and investigating the paranormal.
